SHEK MAMUDIAN, IRAQ: The opening to a karez shaft in Iraqi Kurdistan which is being repaired by UNESCO...UNESCO has hired two Iranians to repair ancient underground aqueducts in Iraqi Kurdistan...Over 100,000 people in northern Iraq have abandoned their homes since 2005 because of severe water shortages.
